Michigan Football Recruiting: Linebacker Problems?

Michigan Football Recruiting: Linebacker Problems?

Will the son of a former Ohio State Captain be the first piece of the Michigan Linebacker puzzle for the 2013 class?

It’s good to be a Michigan Wolverine football fan these days. Not so long ago those that fancied themselves a Wolverine were worried about trying to get bowl elgible. Hell, not so long ago trying to figure out a way to avoid fumbling the ball 5 times a game were paramount. Today the Michigan faithful find themselves pondering the terrible conundrum that only a football powerhouse can find themselves in: what if we accept the commitments of the wrong blue chip linebacker prospects?

Who’s left to sign for the 2012 College Football Recruiting Class?

Whos left to sign for the 2012 College Football Recruiting Class?

5Q Top 100 WR Stefon Diggs is still looking for a good fit.

Signing Day seems to get more and more hectic every year. Prospects (and their families) seem to have a growing penchant for the dramatic leading to Signing Day switches galore, but that is what makes National Signing Day the event that it is. Let’s face it, it’s a soap opera for men.

The drama isn’t entirely over, however. Three 5Q Top 250 prospects remain unsigned. Let’s take a quick look at the prospects that remain on the board:

Stefon Diggs (WR, Good Counsel) will hold out until at least February 10th at this point. Diggs is without question one of the biggest playmakers in this entire class, but he comes with a little extra baggage that may have cooled a few programs. It has been a long process for the talented receiver. I truly don’t feel that he has any real idea where he will land at this point, though it will likely come down to the schools he has made officials to which are California, Florida, Auburn and Ohio State. The wildcard is hometown school Maryland, who he will take a last second visit to this weekend.

Davonte Neal (WR, Chaparral) Davonte Neal had thought that his recruitment was over until he tried to commit to Ohio State and was then told that they no longer had room for him. There has been a few reports with conflicting info, so it is hard to say what really happened, but it appears as if it is down to Arizona (who he will possibly visit on February 10th) and Oklahoma at this point.

The Tucson Citizen has a full report of the Ohio State situation, including a full response from Davonte’s father Luke Neal.

Jordan Diamond (OT, Simeon) hasn’t had nearly as tumultuous a recruitment as the previous two, though he has flirted with several schools. Diamond had made it very clear all along that he would be announcing with his teammates on February 3rd and that is exactly what he will do. Michigan was once thought to be a lock for his commitment, but it is hardly a forgone conclusion that he will be a Wolverine tomorrow. Arkansas, Auburn and Wisconsin join Michigan as the schools in the running for Diamond’s services tomorrow.

Should Tennessee Head Coach Dooley Release DeAnthony Arnett?

DeAnthony Arnett is coming off one of the best performances by a freshman wide receiver in Tennessee Volunteer history. Unfortunately for Tennessee, the talented receiver has requested a transfer because of the hardship on his family due to his father’s serious illness. Arnett released the following letter to the press last night: Read more »

The Science of Denard Robinson

ESPN's Sports Science takes a look at what makes Michigan Quarterback Denard Robinson so special. The start with the obviously comparison to Michael Vick, but then they get into the good stuff.

Ohio State will find out NCAA Sanctions Today

The Buckeyes will finally get wind of its fate today. Everything points to a favorable decision for Ohio State, but who really ever knows with the NCAA. Recruits have all been told by Urban Meyer that there will not be any long-term repercussions and Meyer would likely have passed on the job had he caught wind of anything major coming down. The Lane Kiffin path to USC was not derailed by their major sanctions and it can actually make the transition a little easier for a head coach in terms of the pressure you have to succeed immediately. That is a scenario Urban Meyer is unlikely to look for in my opinion. Meyer's history doesn't exactly lend itself to the idea that he is the type to wait around for a few years for success.

Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith has confirmed that we will find out for sure today at 3 p.m.EST.

Michigan Wolverine Football Recruiting: Meet David Perkins

I must admit that I didn’t think that Michigan would look to add another running back in this class, even in the wake of Bri’onte Dunn reaffirming his commitment to Ohio State. The Wolverines, however, did not waste any time moving on from Dunn and offering Athlete David Perkins, who was once committed to Notre Dame.

Most schools are looking at Perkins as a linebacker, but Michigan wants him as a running back. He is a tremendous athlete who would be a welcome addition to any class regardless of position at 6’2 and 215 lbs. He has excellent speed for a guy his size and certainly does not shy away from contact, so he would fit very nicely into the role that Michigan fans had hoped Bri’onte Dunn might fill.
