The MLB is the best league to introduce relegation, it has all of the required underpinnings for a successful experiment.
SACRAMENTO -- This weekend I was absolutely devastated by the relegation of West Ham after their crushing 3-0 win against Leeds, ending their 14 year streak. This got us thinking. The constant threat of relegation and the delicious taste of promotion brings an edge of danger to each season. The US's franchise model keeps teams as fixtures. This model is optimized for steady profits and investability, to maximize owner's profits and jersey sales, it is not designed to create a robust undulating lineup across the sport.
The best league that can test this out? It is obviously the MLB. All of the underpinnings exist for a relegation/promotion system exist. First, there is the Minor League underneath, feeding the MLB. With relegation? The MLB would gain less single-player talent at a time and instead most of a team would be replaced completely. For example, the Sacramento Rivercats could, and probably should, be promoted to the MLB and the San Francisco Giants would be relegated to West Sac. There is already precedent here; see the Athletics.
Finally, the MLB is a massive league, and much is influx as it is, see how Patrick Bailey was traded in early 2026 for example. The MLB is already used to upsets, even for key players.
We'll be waiting for the Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds TV show leading the New Orleans Baby Cakes into the prime time.
