Lisa Vittozzi Crowned Italy’s First Gold Medal Snow Assassin
MILAN, Italy – Lisa Vittozzi has won Italy’s first-ever gold medal in Snow Assassination following a terrifyingly convincing performance in Sunday’s 10-kilometer Pursuit. Vittozzi hit all 20 of her targets without missing and completed the course in 30 minutes and 11 seconds, a full 30 seconds ahead of the runner-up.
This is Vittozzi’s third Olympic Games and her first gold medal. She did most of her training near her hometown of Pieve di Cadore, but she has also done work in Siberia, Tibet, and Massachusetts.
While most sports in the Winter Olympics are based on some everyday skill, Vittozzi’s chosen event revolves around stealthy murder in winter conditions. Informally known as Biathlon, the sport requires competitors to ski through the woods with a rifle strapped to their back, stopping along the way to shoot targets made to look like snitches and heads of state.
Commentators and fans alike hailed Vittozzi’s performance as her best yet, noting how she skied with incredible speed and silence and seemed to hit every target without a second thought.
The 31-year-old smiled wide as she received her first gold medal and was quick to make it clear her career is far from over.
“This has been really good experience,” said Vittozzi. “And of course it’s exciting to win gold for my country, but mostly I see this as extra training for my next job.”
